Frequently Asked Questions

What does my class fee cover?

Class fees cover 2 hours of class time per week with an instructor. Fees also help pay for glaze cost, firing, and access to tools and equipment. If you would like to bring your own tools you are welcome, but the studio will have basic tools. In addition, class fees provide students with access to open studio hours for students to make and practice.

Our instructors are professional practicing artists as well as experienced educators; class fees allows us to provide paid opportunities for professional artists to share their skills and passion for clay.

Can I buy clay somewhere else?

Unfortunately, no.

In order to maintain our studio equipment and meet the needs of our enrolled students we do not offer firings for outside clay. Our glazes are formulated to fit the clays provided in our studio.

Do you offer open studio or space rental?

Currently, our space is limited and we will only be providing open studio hours for current students registered in a class.

Do you fire outside work?

Are make-up classes available if I miss a class?

We currently cannot offer make up class sessions if you miss a class. As a current student, you are welcomed and encouraged to use the open studio time to work on the skills of the previous class session that you did attend. To notify your instructor that you will not be in class, please email cottonwoodclay.slc@gmail.com.

What clays and glazes are available?

We currently offer a small selection of clay types for our cone 5 firings: Speckled Buff, Redstone and B-mix (with grog). Porcelain is also available. You can see descriptions of each clay in our shop. Instructors will also show examples of each and provide recommendations on the first day of class.

Our studio glazes are mixed from trusted recipes by studio staff. All studio glazes are food safe, unless otherwise noted.

What temperatures and kiln types do you fire?

We currently fire all glaze work in electric kilns, to cone 5 (approximately 2160F).
